Digital piracy doesn’t actually hurt anyone, right? It’s just unauthorized copying and not theft like real piracy.
From what I've read, those who pirate were mostly never going to buy in the first place. If you absolutely cut out piracy somehow, you get more sales, but it's barely worth the effort.
>>31312 Yeah pretty much https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnhAzecN150
>>31316 Who is Timothy Cain?
>>31317 Dev of Fallout, Temple of Elemental Evil, VTM Bloodlines
>>31318 He makes a good point at the 7 minute mark that people say they want to have more games like this good old one, but it's not doable, because they don't sell well as many people pirate it. If you want more of it, you have to financially support it.
Digital piracy was never stealing. Stealing implies removing the object where it belongs. Digital theft is only possible if you delete the original in the process. Noone ever did that. So it was and will ever be a copyright infirgment or unathorized copy, nothing else. The rest of wordings are propaganda to make it sound like a crime. But it isn't. It's a civil code case not a criminal code case.
>doesn’t actually hurt anyone, right? This is just as wrong as saying that every pirated game causes the price of that game in damage to the developer. The answer is somewhere in the middle.
>>31328 >The answer is somewhere in the middle. It really isn't. I'm not going to buy it anyway, unless upon trying it for free I like it enough to actually consider giving anyone my money.
>>31319 I do think there needs to be a big overhaul of how we think about digital products. Everyone complains about subscriptions nowadays but actually I'm a fan of that kind of model. For example you could subscribe to studios who make games that you'd like to play, and when they get enough money to develop them, then that game just gets released for free for everyone.
>>31329 >unless upon trying it for free I like it enough to actually consider giving anyone my money. Nobody pirates a game and when he finds out that he likes it pays full price for it. That's what neckbeard basement dwellers say to appear moral. Some might buy the original when it is gets discounted. But that is still not the same.
>>31330 Subscriptions are good, if they have a good offering and are well priced, for example like Spotify (although it got rather expensive over the last few years). But the problem becomes apparent when content gets deleted from them and you realize you own nothing and lose access to your shit.
>>31330 >then that game just gets released for free for everyone. Why would anyone do that? Neither the developer nor the people who pay for it have any incentive to do that.
>>31334 >What is Open Source? Perhaps you dont have an incentive to be kind to each other.
>>31334 The developer says 'we need this much money to make a game, and we'll collect subscriptions until we have it'. That amount contains what the developer wants to get paid etc so there's incentive for them. Yes sure they can't make a game and just milk it forever, but that kind of IP manipulation is not very good for society anyway. tl;dr something similar to what kickstarter are doing, but that process could be much improved and put into law etc
Are there any Bernds here who ever actually created something (video game developers, musicians, writers etc.)? How do you feel about people pirating your art?

>>31340 says the slav schizo that just shat a bunch of insults into the other thread
>>31332 >Nobody pirates a game and when he finds out that he likes it pays full price for it. I do. Especially as of lately, as the gaming industry in the last decade or so has become increasingly shit. >>31333 >Subscriptions are good Lol, no they are not. Just another way tor a corporation to extract more money from the willing sheep.
>>31342 But by eventually offering it for free you divide your buying userbase into people that want to give you money for moral reasons and people that want to get the game. The latter is a way bigger group that then has to decide whether they wait until another sucker is found to finance the game instead of you or being the sucker to even get the game to even being made. At the end you will reduce the amount of people that will give you money which will result in less games even being financed.
>>31345 Please name the games that you first pirated and then payed full price for in the last two years.
>>31332 >Nobody pirates a game and when he finds out that he likes it pays full price for it. I do.
>>31342 >The developer says 'we need this much money to make a game, and we'll collect subscriptions until we have it' You're so comically naive that you must be like under 20 or something. You are yet to realise that corporations want all the money in the whole world, and that is literally the only single one sole motivation for any action that they take: extracting money from you. Not making games, not pleasing fanbases. Extracting money.
>>31343 I'm a software developer and I don't give a shit, I also pirate stuff myself all the time. Well, I work on software that doesn't make sense without its specialized hardware, or get paid for open source stuff, or in any case never "suffer" directly and personally from piracy (it's the employer's or customer's problem). The only thing I'd object to is doing licensing violations for profit instead of the usual personal consumption. By the way, I do buy games on Steam because it's cheap and convenient.
>>31347 Dark Souls 1 and 2, Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, Atomic Heart, Age of Wonders 4, Baldur's Gate 3, Witcher 3, Mouthwashing, Europa Universalis 4, Knights and Merchants, Stellaris, To the Moon. That's just off the top of my head. >in the last two years Fuck off with your arbitrary demands.
>>31349 Only because the system is set up in the way it is due to IP law etc. Kickstarter-like models do work because we see them working right now.
>>31352 "The system" is the existence of corporations in the gaming industry.
>>31351 So the the only game from that list that came out in the last two years is Mouthwashing. You bought one game in the last two years. How many games have you pirated during that time?
>>31354 >Games are only bought on release Are you a zoomer or just genuinely retarded?
>>31353 Did you change your proxy from germanyball?
>>31355 That's what matters most for the reception of the success for a game and hence for the developer. That you feel the need to pirate a 10yo game to try it out before paying 15€ or so for it primarily shows that you are poor. Especially with older games you can just look at the ratings to get a good feeling for the quality and maybe watch a gameplay video to see if you'd like it.
>>31359 I don't give a shit about "what matters most for the reception of the success for a game". If I pirate a game and really like it, I might then consider giving dev my money. >That you feel the need to pirate a 10yo game to try it out You sound mildly triggered, zoomer. >before paying 15€ Is this another instance of your zoomer retardation of thinking that every game goes on a permanent sell a couple months after release? >primarily shows that you are poor Oh boy, you might not be just a zoomer, but also a triggered corporate shill on top of that. Only they are braindead enough to unironically use "LMAO UR POOOOOOR" in 2025 about being cautious and considerate with what you buy. Either way, you sound like a real shit-eater.
>>31364 What famous artist is the papaerclip man? What did he make?
>>31363 Why are you so angry? It's obvious that piracy robs devs of a portion of purchases, you don't have to invoke an imaginary principle that makes online purchases bad and piracy morally neutral. t. pirates music
>>31366 He plays in a melodic death metal band. >>31370 >It's obvious that piracy robs devs of a portion of purchases Lol. Lmao, even.
>>31372 Do you seriously believe everyone follows your same moral code?
>>31370 Small boards typically have one major board schizo that shits up the threads and in our case its the bavarian. Usually they get worse and worse over time until they are eventually banned.

>>31376 Do you genuinely expect me to dox people and by extension quite easily also myself on an anonymous imageboard?
>>31380 Please do. I want to """buy""" your music. :3
>>31380 So in other words we are talking about some nobody who probably gets next to nothing from his music and certainly doesn't live off it?
Games and movies should be free anyway, since artists need to be bullied into making good content otherwise.
>>31384 That's ehat AI will achieve in the conceivable future.
>>31378 What moral code, schizo? How pretentious are you to still act like you do not comprehend the simple concept that pirates are not going to buy the things they pirate anyway, unless they consciously make a decision to give their money away as a reward? >>31379 You sound mildly upset, zoomer retard. >>31383 >Are there any Bernds here who ever actually created something >"we are talking about some nobody who probably gets next to nothing from his music and certainly doesn't live off it" Oh look, another triggered retard. >and certainly doesn't live off it Is this a veiled attempt to justify the mindset of feeling bad about pirating Metallica, LMAO?
>>31384 Based and correct take. AI will purge the commercial subhuman """artists""" and will bring soul back into art.
>>31388 >the simple concept that pirates are not going to buy the things they pirate anyway, unless they consciously make a decision to give their money away as a reward? I bought several games I once pirated to have access to updates, to have them in my steam library and a little bit to support the devs. But mainly for my own convenience. Where is your god now?
>>31392 >Where is your god now? Read the thread, that's how I mostly buy games in the recent years: pirate them, and then buy them if I genuinely like them.
>>31392 Sames. It's easy to go to fitgirl repacks or whatever and pirate a recent release, but I find it obnoxious to hunt for content updates in scene forums when that stuff just downloads automatically on Steam. Back when I was a NEET I pirated everything. I think the only time when I bought a game after finishing a cracked version was the first KCD in 2018.
>>31394 >but I find it obnoxious to hunt for content updates in scene forums when that stuff just downloads automatically on Steam This is what private trackers are good for.
>>31394 >but I find it obnoxious to hunt for content updates in scene forums How often do you even need to update, lol? A good tracker or a thematic forum will keep you adequately up to date. Especially if the alternative is something like paying hundreds for dozens of DLCs to some absolute scum like Paradox.
