I'm really tempted to get a Mac Mini. Lörs onions on this computer?
>>22202 I mean Steam Machine lol
>>22203 I don’t care about gaming
Why are people so hyped about the Steam Machine? They tried that already over ten years ago and it didn't work out, why would it now?
>>22215 Imagine not believing in Gabe.
>>22215 We've had the Steam Deck in between then, plus traditional consoles are decreasing in popularity.
If people want to play games on steam then why don't they just get a computer?
>>22215 because linux is good now. steam deck already proved that, and it's successful. if the rumors are true and it costs about 800$ then it's also affordable and compatible with alternatives you could build yourself. however if it's over 1000 then idk. i'm just hyped that linux gaming is going mainstream, and no one forces you to get the steam machine or steam deck to reap the benefits of their success.
>>22222 Quints telling the truth.
>>22215 Because Volvo spent lots of resources to further develop several key linux components and it actually works now, see the success of steam-deck for example
>>22227 >lots of resources Basically nothing compared to what MSFT and Apple must be spending. Just a few parts of the "desktop Linux" software stack urgently needed improvement, and I think Valve is probably paying about 20 external developers or so to do it. These aren't 300k+ Silicon Valley salaries, probably closer to 100k.
Fun fact: MS Azure servers are running on Linux
>>22233 I have no numbers, but KDE has become 100 times better since Volvos involvement, also the progress of proton has changed the game undeniably
>>22236 There are some areas where Valve helped a lot, like kwin-wayland and multi-screen support. In others, it's just a long time with constant improvements and no big breaks that reset the progress in stabilizing things. There is no cascade of attention-deficit teenagers anymore because, frankly, most KDE developers are at least one if not two decades away from being teenagers.
>>22234 Yeah, you can easily rent windows VMs and even windows containers exists but no one cares. Even .NET projects run on linux in the cloud these days. I wonder if microsoft will just ditch windows at some point and focus fully on Azure.
Why not get the GabeCube instead?
Convince me not to get the Switch 2 over the Steam Box.
>>22240 Using Azure with .NET is godsend. Great Integration with Visual Studio, also Aspire rocks. Twenty years ago, i could not imagine, but Microsoft does not suck that hard.
>>22234 Counter point: A lot about MS Azure sucks ass.
>>22283 How can you give a counterpoint to a fun fact? YOU IDIOT!
>>22285 Counter point: no fun allowed.
>>22286 Counterpoint: Habasch
>>22224 They have gear acquisition syndrome. Buying it is like getting heroin injected.
My summary after using it for a week: the Mac Mini as a device is really really nice, but MacOS is fucking infuriating and just feels castrated in comparison to Windows.
>>23430 I felt same for many months but got used to it. (it helps that my laptop is still Windows for shit I need it for)
>>23458 Yeah I could also get used to it and I already did to a certain degree, there’s just the question whether it’s worth it.
>>23465 Sorry, can I redirect you to this video? His experience was kinda similar to mine and I don’t feel like writing a long treatise right now: https://youtu.be/bCdcuJZux_g (MacOS starts at 9:55)
>>23467 Looks like a complete cancer clickbait video. Also, Bernd didn't ask for some cancer youtuber opinion but yours. What feels castrated? t. someone who always suffers when trying to upload a file that's already open. Fucking windows won't let me READ an excel file while uploading it in a browser. My workflow on a Mac: Open a file, edit it, save it, upload it. My workflow on Windows: Open a file, edit it, save it, upload it, get a stupid error message, close it, upload it, try to find it again, open it again. Who's castrated? Also, my average uptime is 1d on Windows. I have to use a Windows PC at wörk, I use WSL where I can. However, after a day or two, the shit stops working. I get obscure errors, VS Code can't connect to it, terminals I have open keep working, but new ones just crash. I have to restart and of course, Windows is too retarded to remember what windows I had open so I have to re-open and re-position over 9000 windows to get back to where I left the day before. Every morning is a 10-minute humiliation ritual where it simply won't let me continue the work from the day before. Meanwhile my uptime on unix systems is in the order of months. 113 days on my linux laptop at the moment. When I still had a MacBook at my previous job, it was similar. Not trying to flame, just trying to understand why you think it's castrated and hoping that some Windows guru can tell me how to make the system more usable. I suck at Windows, so maybe you guys can tell me "well, have you tried to unselect the 'self destruct after 24h' button in the system settings?" or "There's the 'I'm a big boy so let me upload files while they are opened' option in Excel, try that"
>>23472 >Upload a file Is this the 90s? Just use the cloud, geez
>>23472 I remember in 2022 when a previous work of mine forced my PC station to update to window 11. And when right clicking on a file to rename it, the rename option was hidden behind another submenu that I needed to click to open, it was so strange. I guess they changed/fixed this. For me MacOS feels like using debian or any similar Linux distro, with the exception that things are well maintained, nothing particularly special.
>>23472 Which image viewer do you use?
>>23548 Loupe, aka gnome image viewer, Preview and whatever the standard is on Windows 11.
>>23549 I also have another question, something I noticed: some add-ons that are completely free on other platforms and browsers only have paid versions for Safari, for example Dark Reader and Sponsorblock? And the number 1 alternative Dark Mode add on for Safari "Noir" also costs money. Why is that? Why is it that specifically on MacOS programs often cost money while they're free on other platforms? I read somewhere that developers need money to live, sure, but isn't that the case for other platforms as well?
>>23550 I have no idea, I don't use paid add ons or Safari (on my Mac).
>>23472 >hold a character key >MacOS fucking opens a diacritic menu instead of typing out the character many times in a row It's just lots of small things like this
>>23577 I don't remember how I turned it off, but it might have been this: >defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false (And then log out and back in)
>>23583 Another thing: you can't open a private window of Firefox directly from the Dock without Firefox already being open in the background. Annoying.
Why would you want to buy a Mac to install Windows on it?
>>23583 Do you have any other tips for a MacOS beginner?
>Mac >Windows Nothing in this thread makes sense.
>>23715 Why do Linux users make their whole personality revolve around the OS they use? Nobody cares what you use as long as it works for you.
>>23715 you DO know that OS X is based on Linux, right.
>>24218 It's based on Unix, like Linux is. That's a difference. But nice try.
>>24228 GNU is not Unix.
>>23715 why do they have their balls ripped apart?
>>24233 Is the Mirror your iPhone app available in Switzerland? In the EU it's blocked.
I bought a 280 euro mini pc. Ryzen 5500u, 16 gb ram, 500gb nvme. I hope it can play eve online. If not I just play wow vanilla private servers.
>>24520 Yes, it’s breddy nice.
