So I've finally been playing the original Shantae on GBC (emulated) and was pretty underwhelmed. I've heard and read over the years, again and again, "This is this amazing GBC indie game, and it's so good, you gotta play it!" It looks great, that's for sure—great use of color palettes and beautiful sprite work—but a lack of parallax and general line distortion effects; there are older games that do that better. But it kinda ends there. The soundtrack is boring and mostly not fitting the areas, the dance mechanic is, in theory, a cool Zelda-like idea but tedious, the combat is boring, and the controls are flawed, with run requiring an attack in the first place. The harpy has ice physics for some reason, the spider can't run. All the abilities you gather throughout the game also feel like they have one or two purposes, and that's it. Also, zero replay value. I unlocked everything. Well. And there's lots of backtracking, and the structure is always the same: find town, talk to NPC, find dungeon.
How has this game developed such a cult following, and there are even more titles, except for the big-tit genie and ass-shaking deviantart porn fantasy?
I accidentally made a whole thread but cannot delete it.
